Menlo Park, California
Looking to relocate their Menlo Park headquarters, Novo Construction ambitiously chose to renovate this ubiquitous half-empty and fully-underutilized, windowless, single story industrial building. Originally rendered in a quasi-Mediterranean style, Studio TMT’s challenge was to infuse it with light and transform it into a modern office environment that provides users the flexibility to work the way they want to work. New fenestration on three sides of the simple rectangular structure allows natural daylight to penetrate with the addition of a glazed exterior landscaped atrium inserted into the middle of the floor plate: a literal twist on “bringing the outside in”.
Interior planning divides the structure lengthwise. One half of the building supports individual work: both open and closed office spaces. The other half supports communal and public functions: reception lobby, conferencing, lunch room as well as space allocation for a future workout facility. The atrium orients and visually binds these two programmatic halves.
The building entry is marked by a Corten steel-clad fin wall that slices the building’s simple plaster-clad volume and is further accented by a suspended glass canopy leading one inward.
The project achieved LEED Silver and won the CICA “Best LEED Interior – 2011” award.
