235 Second Street
Client
Birmingham Development
Location
San Francisco, California
The building is located in the South of Market area of San Francisco which has become the center for redevelopment in the last ten years with plans for a new transit hub. The surrounding area is rooted in industrial architecture and 235 Second Street is a conscious response as a contextual building that complements its neighbors. The building facade is broken down into three distinct elements. The first is an adaptive re-use of a three story concrete industrial building; the second is a new building on the adjacent site, and the third is a glass atrium which connects the new and the old. A small urban park in front of the new building provides a transition into the building's lobby. The lobby's centerpiece is a large stainless steel sculpture by Anish Kapoor. A staircase in the atrium runs through the entire building as a pedestrian thoroughfare and allows an uninterrupted view from the street level to the top floor.
